Field Experience 4 - Distant Placement

For my last field experience, I chose to do a Distant Placement back home in New Jersey, USA. This allowed me to get an understanding of how the teaching system works in the US after experiencing the Quebec system for the past 3 years.

Animal Farm Essay

This is the rubric for an essay that the grade 9 students did based off the book Animal Farm by George Orwell. This essay allowed for a fulfillment of C5, evaluating the students' learning of the novel as well as developing their writing skills. It also brought in C12, using digital technologies as the students typed their essays as well as using Google Classroom and its grading capabilities to assess the essays.

Irony Presentation

A lesson on irony was the first real lesson done with the grade 9 students during this Field Experience. By incorporating literary, media, and cultural examples, this allows for me to as a cultural facilitator (C1), helping students connect abstract literary concepts to real-world contexts.  When designing the presentation, this creates interactive learning situations (C4), and to meet the diverse needs of learners (C7) I used a worksheet that the students filled out as we went through the presentation, adapting to different learning styles for the students. The presentation itself also incorporates the use of digital technologies (C12).

Graphic Novel Presentation Worksheet

This worksheet goes in conjunction with the lesson plan also featured here as an introduction of the elements of a graphic novel for students to understand that as well as how to actually read a graphic novel. This worksheet partnered with a corresponding presentation brought the opportunity for both planning learning (C3) and mobilizing digital technologies (C12).

Intro to Graphic Novels Lesson Plan

This lesson incorporated both digital technologies as well as planning learning as demonstrated with the worksheet but also worked as a pre-reading for the graphic novel Maus that we read as a class. The worksheets used for that helped me act as a cultural facilitator (C1) and take student diversity into account (C7) through encouraging different student ideas and ways of learning.

One Page Research Project

This research project aimed to support the students'  love of learning (C8) by allowing them to choose their topics and what they wanted to research, encouraging them to get information that interested them. The project got the students to look into the who, what, where, when, why, and how of a specific topic and they were told to make their posters colorful and visually appealing and this was a specific example of a perfect poster.

Maus Final Unit Test

After reading Maus, the students took a unit test incorporating some other topics covered within the unit as well as elements of the novel and I created this test to evaluate their learning (C5) and when reviewing for the test I made sure to cover all information that would be on the test to ensure they had the best possible chance for success.
